Workshop rationale and aim:

IEA Bioenergy Task 40 is an international working group, providing information (e.g. through reports,`scientific articles and workshops) on the development of international bioenergy trade – see www.bioenergytrade.org for more information. Jointly with the ERIA network (focusing on Standardization of Biodiesel Fuel for Vehicles in East Asia) we wanted to focus on the ongoing bioenergy trade in East Asia (Japan, China, South Korea) and South-East Asia (The ASEAN countries). Also the countries currently exporting to this region werel be highlighted. The markets for liquid and solid biofuels in the (South-)East Asian region are developing rapidly, and international trade of various biomass commodities has increased strongly over the past years. For example, Japan has been a long-time importer of ethanol, and has recently also started to import wood pellets from Canada. Malaysia and Indonesia have become major suppliers of vegetable oils in the region, and have been developing a biodiesel industry over the past years. China has large domestic biomass potentials, but is also looking for imports to meet its demand for both liquid transportation fuels and solid fuels for electricity production. The aims of this workshop were:
1) To provide an overview of ongoing biomass use and trade developments in the South-East Asian region, including a review of existing policy initiatives in various countries in the region

2) To point out the supply and demand of solid biomass streams (wood pellets, wood chips, palm kernel shells, other agricultural residues) and the major industrial players active

3) To show current supply and demand developments for liquid biofuels in the region, how these have developed in past years and where trade flows will be heading in years to come

4) To point out both opportunities for further trade and (policy) barriers to be overcome.

This workshop targets mainly industry representatives, but also policy makers, representatives from NGOs and science are welcome.
